Distance Learning - Special Education

  • The Alexandria Public School’s (APS) is committed to providing Free Appropriate Public Education during the Covid-19 pandemic.  This document addresses the following areas: Communication with Guardian/Parents, Evaluation, Due Process Timelines, access to resources, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). 

    The district will continue to provide services according to individuals educational plans (IEP) and follow State and Federal guidelines for implementing, amending and proposing services.   It is the intent of APS to provide free appropriate public education (FAPE) to all students that qualify for services under MN regulations. Additional information can be found on the website under (https://www.alexschools.org/page/182) the Total Special Education System Plan for Alexandria Public Schools in accordance with Minnesota Rule 3525.1100. This plan also includes an assurance for compliance with the federal requirements pertaining to districts’ special education responsibilities found in United States Code, title 20, chapter 33, sections 1400 et seq., and Code of Federal Regulations, title 34, part 300. This document is a companion to the Application for Special Education Funds – Statement of Assurances (ED-01350-29).

    APS is committed to providing communication about your child’s services and due process procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic.  It is important to note that case-managers will work with you and your child during the week of March 24th-March 27th, 2020 using alternative communication: virtual platforms (i.e. google hangout, FaceTime), email, text, and phone.   This communication restriction will continue during the time of distance learning due to the face-face restrictions required because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
